William Lee: Sit on your butt!
In 1950s Mexico City, a forty-something American expatriate lives a lonely life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student prompts the man to finally make a meaningful connection with someone. Ultimately, it was Daniel Craig who convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him “That’s the guy.” after seeing Starkey.. Or what’s left of it after four years in the Navy.. With Orfej (1950). WEIRD. This word has more than one meaning.
What does he want?
The most common is “strange or bizarre.” The second most common usage is “homosexual.” Both meanings apply to this film, but the first meaning is probably more appropriate. This film has a lot more in common with APOCALYPSE NOW than it does with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The story concerns “Lee”, a man in his fifties in the 1950s. He is an American who has achieved a certain level of material success and is now living a relatively hedonistic expatriate life in Mexico. He is an alcoholic and in the early stages of drug addiction. He spends his days and nights hanging out in gay bars and having meaningless affairs with men with whom he has nothing in common except that they are homosexual. It is an empty existence.
He would like to know
He cannot put it into words. He meets a younger man who seems bisexual (his partner in the bar is a woman), but a relationship develops between them. It is not particularly satisfying for him. He expects more from the younger man than the younger man is prepared to give. He eventually convinces him to accompany him on a journey into the jungles of South America in search of a plant containing a drug that is supposed to give him telepathic powers. He believes that this drug will allow him to understand what he wants without resorting to words. He is told that there is a shaman in the jungle who can provide him with the plant.
This will open a door that they cannot close
The two men head into the jungle and indeed find the woman, played by Lesley Manville, who is a fierce force, an old woman who holds a knife and a gun and who seems thirsty for blood. They gain at least some of her trust, but she warns them against taking drugs. I am glad I saw this movie, but it is not for everyone. The ending is cryptic and the gay sex scenes might be a little too specific for some people. It is not quite hardcore pornography, but, thanks mainly to the sound effects, it comes close. And even drug-induced hallucinations can be very upsetting for some people. This film is wonderful to watch; the art direction and cinematography are exceptional, with each scene beautifully composed.
The acting is also excellent
For me, it evoked Edward Hopper’s paintings in their depiction of an objective isolation of the psyche. Daniel Craig can break your heart with very little. I predict that both he and Lesley Manville will get Oscar nominations; Manville could win in the supporting actress category. It was only when I saw her name in the credits that I realized she was the same actress who played the lead in MRS HARRIS GOES TO PARIS. She is an excellent performance. I think this film will become a staple of the art house circuit. It certainly deserves more than one viewing.
