Features They Stooge to Conga (1943)
Story
A generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing love, loss, laughter and life.. Based on the comic strip "Here" by Richard McGuire. It was first published as a comic strip in the comic magazine "Raw" in 1989, and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014.. At one point early in the film, Richard’s father names several towns that he states are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are all the towns along Interstate 80 in PA, which had not yet been built at the time.. [from the trailer] Richard: You know, if you want, you could spend the rest of the night here.Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here..
There were problems for me, however, which some of the previous fourteen reviewers have already pointed out
Clarinet Concerto, stanzas 1 and 2 Written by Artie Shaw Performed by Artie Shaw and his orchestra Courtesy of RCA Records By arrangement with Sony Music Entertainment. The most intriguing part of this film for me was the clever use of technology to jump back and forth through time – but not space – to show what happened in an unremarkable location in what is now New England from the Age of the Dinosaurs to the present day. The transitions are often accomplished by adding a picture-in-picture window on top of a central video and then jumping to another time in some smaller windows before the entire screen also changes to that era. I’ll admit that the trick does get old after a while, but I still found it clever at least sometimes. The main story – that of the Young family, through its three generations – is not particularly interesting.
Why should we care about one of Ben Franklin’s sons?
But the other, side stories, which intertwine in and out of it, are not really interesting at all. Or a young Indian/Native American young woman and her young lover? Or even the man who invented the Lazy Boy lounge chair? Nothing is done to connect these stories to the main story, and they are not of interest in themselves. This was especially true during the brief time we spent with a young African-American couple living in a house for an unspecified period of time in our modern era.
I wasn’t bored
(They have COVID masks.) All we see of them is the woman getting along well with her Latina housekeeper. And at one point the father gives his son what we white people call a “story,” in which the father tells his son how to behave when he is pulled over by a white police officer so that he doesn’t get shot. It’s pretty cliché, and none of my black friends have ever had that conversation with their parents. Nothing really holds these various stories together. Since they are not interesting in their own right, and don’t reinforce the main story, that’s a problem.
But once in the cinema, even though it wasn’t boring, it was enough for me
I could even watch this movie again on TV, where I could pause it every now and then for a break. From Alien: Romulus to Road House, take a look back at some of our favorite posters of 2024.
